Energy Flow through the Meridians
The "small universal energy flow", or the "small universe" is a qigong term
meaning a continuous flow of vital energy round the ”ren mai” (conceptual meridian ) and “du mai” (governing ) meridians.
Qigong, pronounced as "chi kung", is the once-esoteric art of developing vital energy, and the relevant aspects of qigong have been used to promote health and cure illnesses. The ren and du meridians are the two main meridians running along the whole length at the front and back of our body respectively.
The "big universal energy flow", or the "big universe", refers to a continuous
flow of vital energy throughout all our twelve primary meridians. The twelve
primary meridians as shown above, are those that flow through our twelve major internal organs.
If you want to eliminate hundreds of illnesses and live a hundred years -
who doesn't? - you have to practice qigong from a master. It is not advisable to learn advanced qigong by reading a book, though learning simple qigong exercises, from a book for health, is acceptable.
The purpose of this paragraph, therefore, is not to provide instruction for
practicing the small or the big universe, but to provide information regarding the meridian systems along which their energy flows, information that will reveal some of the puzzling secrets of Chinese medicine.
Meridians are classified into two groups, namely "zheng jing" or primary
meridians, and "jijing" or secondary meridians. Primary meridians flow directly to major internal organs, secondary meridians do not. They are twelve primary meridians and eight secondary meridians, from which are derived meridian extensions.
